What happens when you mix adaptogens with caffeine?

Combining adaptogens with caffeine can offer a balanced approach to enhancing energy and focus. Caffeine is a well-known central nervous system stimulant that increases alertness by blocking the neurotransmitter adenosine, thereby increasing dopamine and norepinephrine levels. However, it can sometimes cause jitteriness, anxiety, and energy crashes due to its stimulating effects.

When mixed with caffeine, adaptogens can provide a complementary boost to energy and focus while potentially reducing some of caffeine's common side effects, like jitteriness and energy crashes. Adaptogens, such as ashwagandha, are believed to modulate the body's stress response, stabilising cortisol levels and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In this research, a group of athletes was given a supplement containing caffeine and rhodiola rosea extract before performing a series of endurance exercises. The athletes who took the combination reported enhanced energy and endurance compared to those who only took caffeine. Additionally, the participants who consumed the caffeine-rhodiola blend experienced fewer jittery side effects than those who took only caffeine, indicating that the adaptogen might help balance out the overstimulation that caffeine can sometimes cause. Although more extensive research is needed to confirm these findings broadly, this study hints at the synergistic potential of combining adaptogens with caffeine to achieve more balanced and sustained energy levels.
